Communications Intern

YOUTH SERVICE AMERICA (YSA) – the global organization that improves communities by increasing the number and the diversity of young people serving in substantive roles – is seeking a Communications Intern to assist the Communications Director.

Applicants may be graduate or undergraduate students and should be able to commit to approximately 20 hours / week. This intern position is non-paid, but will offer a travel stipend. Offices are conveniently located nearby the McPherson Square metro station.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Support Communications Director with all public relations and marketing efforts
  • Assist with promotions and media relations for Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22) – the world’s largest and longest running youth service event
  • Draft press releases, media alerts and marketing collateral
  • Research and craft media lists
  • Assist in pitching and fulfilling press requests
  • Assist in image management
  • Liaise with third-party communication departments
  • Track and report media coverage
  • Take lead in establishing institutional, internal knowledge management system
  • Other duties as assigned by Communications Director

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and oral communications skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to multi-task efficiently
  • The Communications Intern must be comfortable taking direction and working within a team setting. Simultaneously, s/he must have the ability to work independently and proactively, at times with minimal direction
  • Proficient with MS Office, Publisher, Excel. Graphic design skills a plus

The ideal candidate will be a “go-getter” and willing to pitch in wherever needed. Strong writing skills, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude are essential. Knowledge of youth service issues and formal Communications education/experience is helpful but not required.
