Dinner, lunch, brunch, dinner and a movie, Netflix night, game night, night out dancing… .I can list the typical dating scenarios for most people, and I can assure you that
can get a little bit boring after a while. So, I suggest you forget about going out to dinner on your next date, and go on a service date instead!A service date is when you and your significant other volunteer together; it’s fun, and it’s free. You’ll help improve your community, save money, and probably keep a few extra pounds off your waist. If you've been dating someone for a while or you're married, think of it as a great opportunity to add variety to your everyday life or to learn something new about one another. If you're just in the beginning stages of the dating game with someone, this is a way to get to know each other better and learn about each other's interests.
You may think that planning a service date will take a lot of time, but it’s a lot easier than you think. Talk with your significant other/future date about what types of volunteer activities would be of interest to the both of you. Consider connecting your volunteer experience to one of your hobbies or interests or find a volunteer opportunity that will allow you to apply skills or talents. I highly encourage you to volunteer with organizations that engage youth in service because young people are fun, energetic, and will definitely make the experience interesting.
Here are a few ideas for service dates:
Contact your local Boys & Girls Club or YMCA. Ask if the youth that attend their programs are doing a service project soon and whether they need any adult volunteers to help. If they don’t have any up coming projects, suggest a simple one like making holiday cards for deployed soldiers or for patients in children’s hospitals.
Do an online search for organizations similar to Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) in your area. FMSC is a nonprofit that provides pre-packaged nutritional meals that can be prepared with only boiling water to deserving children throughout the world. They do an excellent job of providing volunteer opportunities for youth, and if you volunteer during the holiday season or on a Saturday, there is a good chance a young person will be volunteering right beside you.
Contact your local Special Olympics branch and ask how couples can volunteer together. Ask if both of you can help with their Young Athletes program, volunteer at an upcoming event, or become fans and cheer on youth at a Special Olympics sporting event.
Do you dine out frequently or enjoy cooking together? Consider volunteering at a local kitchen or shelter, or find out if the Campus Kitchens Project is operating in your community. You can prepare and serve meals while also sharing your love for food.
If you’re looking for a long-term volunteer commitment, become a Big Couple through the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) organization. Contact your local BBBS branch and ask if they have a Big Couple program. I was a Big a few years ago, and the time commitment is more than manageable. They also provide you with tons of ideas/resources for activities to do with your little . Try to participate in at least one volunteer opportunity with your little every other month.
Hope you find these ideas helpful!
