Namajuzi swamp was once known for supplying safe and clean water for the entire Masaka region, but now due to increasing pollution, the swamp has become an environmental disaster serving as a breading ground for dangerous diseases and pests.
major factors contributing to the swamp' deteriorating health are; - improper discarding of polythene packets, wrappers and plastic materials.- Improper disposal of solid human waste and sanitary wastes- Foreign chemicals from runoff pollution entering the swampOn GYSD 50 children and youth will come together to learn about the harmful effects of pollution. The training will be done by officers from National water and sewerage Corporation Masaka branch. Then youth will use the knowledge acquired to clean up Namajuzi swamp and paint permanent signs that will spread the message of the harmful effects the residents' practices are having on the local environment, and discourage littering.Youth will use the experience to reinforce academic skills such as hygiene, drawing, public speaking, observation, recording and writing. At the end we expect our project to reach over 550,000 local residents will change and become motivated by adapting better ways of waste disposal.
