Hillyard Community Garden

The benefits for healthy eating are also wonderful: fresh, self-grown vegetable can encourage healthy eating as well as a great source of food for low-income families that live within Hillyard community (the lowest-income neighborhood in all of Washington state). Exposure to "green" spaces has also been known ro reduce stress and build feelings of calmness and relaxation. Finally, community gardens offer a unique opportunity to establish relationships in youth and adults across otherwise oppressive physical and cultural boundaries.

children at the Northeast Youth Center are between the ages of 5-12. Our staff ranges in age from college-aged to middle-aged, and we are all community and environmentally minded.
