Reports from the department of environment of Masaka district tell us that on average, 8 in 10 local residents use more than 2 plastic bags as carry bags for their shopping per day. This counts to over 25,000 tones of plastic carrier bags littered in the area per day. And local residents are not yet aware of the danger these plastic materials impose on the local environment.
YSD 40 youth from 4 local schools will come together and learn about the effects of litter and the benefits of preserving the environment. Officers from the department of environment of Masaka district will train the youth. Then youth will pick up plastic carrier bags and educate the public on the harmful effects the plastic carrier bags have on the local environment, and better ways of disposing off the plastic carrier bags in support of a healthier environment. Youth will use the experience to reinforce academic skills such as hygiene, public speaking, observation, recording and writing. At the end we expect our project to reach over 50,000 local residents and motivate them to change by adapting re-cycling and better ways of waste disposal.
