Project YES

For the fourth consecutive year, Project YES will participate in the national initiative for a Semester of Service through Youth Service America. This year, the Angevine Middle School Youth Council, run by Project YES, will complete a service project for a Semester of Service. This project will be launched on Martin Luther King, Jr.

2010 at Project YES's MLK: March for Peace, where students celebrate the life and work of Dr. King. 20 Angevine Middle School Youth Council members will identify a service project using the Project YES service-learning curriculum including: weekly two hours meetings with Project YES volunteers and staff; community mapping, project planning and research; project implementation; celebration and reflection; and team building activities to build community and cohesion within the group. Program staff will provide an introductory, developmentally appropriate overview of current community issues to help students identify the focus of their semester of service project. Students will then conduct secondary and primary research to better understand the community issue including community perception, prevalence, and need. Using a consensus decision making model, students will launch a project to appropriately address the community issue. Through the use of educational activities and critical reflection, students will implement the project throughout the remainder of the semester. GYSD 2010 will provide the forum for students to share their process and project with the community, reflect about the activities, and celebrate their key learnings and successes. As a lead agency for Global Youth Service Day, Project YES anticipates over 600 individuals will be exposed to and educated about the students work at the organization's annual service-learning event, SeLebration.
