September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as well as a federally recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. In observation of this important and historic milestone, thousands of groups and millions of people will pay tribute by participating in the single-largest expression of charitable service in American history. Please take a moment to pre-register your interest in learning more about this national initiative at www.911dayofservice.org - you can decide now or later on how you'd like to participate. To engage youth in service on 9/11 - and to teach young people, many of whom have no first-hand memory of 9/11, about the significance of the event, YSA offers 9 Lessons for 9/11 with related service project ideas: http://bit.ly/jBtalR YSA's Youth Council is supporting 9 for 9/11 service-learning projects through a YSA Grants program. Sign Letter in Support of FY12 Funding for CNCS
The fiscal year 2012 appropriations process has started, and we must tell Congress that CNCS and its programs have deep support in communities all across the country. After months of debate, the FY 2011 budget bill preserved CNCS, but cut the agency's funding by 6%, including a $22.5 million reduction for AmeriCorps, a $12.5 million reduction for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and the complete elimination of Learn and Serve America. Representatives has already voted on a FY 2012 Budget Resolution that again recommends that Congress eliminate ALL funding for CNCS. That resolution is a non-binding budget blueprint, but it is a reminder that we have more work to do. Add your organization to a letter to Congress in support of the President's proposed budget: http://bit.ly/lBZQsF |
